The sulfur in onions may promote hair growth.

Thick, abundant hair is a hallmark of youth and beauty. When hair thins and falls out, people often try home remedies to thicken or re-grow it. Onions, a staple in kitchens around the world, have a long history of culinary, medicinal and cultural uses. This familiar kitchen herb may help protect against bald patches and scanty hair. Whether you suffer from alopecia--or hair loss--or merely thinning hair, you can promote healthy hair growth, and possibly even re-growth, with a simple homemade remedy featuring onions. Apply a small amount to your wrist before using to make sure you aren't allergic to the ingredients.

Step 1

Peel one small red or white onion, and grate it until you have 3 level tbsp. of gratings. Onions are rich in sulfur, an important mineral for promoting healthy hair. According to Stop Now Hair Loss, high sulfur levels in collagen tissue help to diminish hair loss and contribute to rapid re-growth. Onion and onion juice, whether topically applied or ingested in the diet, have been popular ingredients in home hair growth remedies for centuries. In a clinical study titled "Onion Juice (Allium cepa L.), a New Topical Treatment for Alopecia Areata," conducted at Baghdad Teaching Hospital in Iraq and published in the June 2002 issue of Journal of Dermatology, researchers found that topically applied onion juice caused hair re-growth in 86.9 percent of patients with areas of patchy hair loss.

Step 2

Mix the grated onion with 1 tbsp. of honey in a small plastic bowl. Use your hands to scoop up and apply the mixture to damp, freshly-shampooed hair, making sure to rub it into your scalp thoroughly. In addition to the hair growth-stimulating properties of the onion, you get the beneficial effects of the honey, which has antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant properties, as well as functioning as a humectant to help attract and retain moisture in the skin.

Step 3

Allow the mixture to remain on your hair for 40 minutes, then rinse it out thoroughly with warm water. According to My Homemade Beauty, you should use the mixture once a week for best results.
