GINGER TREATMENT FOR HAIR

Ginger root can become a hair treatment, prepared with either water or oil.

Ginger is an important spice from the East Indies that is available in many forms, including candied, fresh, powder and essential oil. In addition to culinary uses, fresh ginger has a long history of use in folk remedies. The knobby rhizome offers a natural way to treat or prevent certain hair conditions.

Potential Benefits

Traditionally, ginger has been used to protect and condition hair, speed up hair growth, reduce dandruff and prevent hair loss. Ginger has a warming, stimulating effect, according to Care2. It also has a reputation as a natural anti-inflammatory agent.

Origin

Using ginger as a hair treatment is a centuries-old practice that comes from Ayurvedic medicine. Ayurveda, a traditional healing system developed in India, relies on herbs for preventing illness and for healing of the whole person. A common Ayurvedic use for ginger is dandruff control.

Types

Common ginger hair treatments include single-ingredient ginger juice preparations, and ginger and oil mixtures. Sesame oil and ginger is a popular combination -- and one typically used in India -- but mixtures of ginger with olive or jojoba oil also work quite well. Suggested frequency of use for either type of treatment is once a week.

Procedure

For a ginger oil treatment, grate fresh ginger root and mix it with sesame oil. Massage the ginger oil into your scalp and leave it on for about 10 minutes. Rinse and shampoo your hair.

To extract ginger juice, peel about 6 ounces of fresh ginger and place it in a blender with ¼ cup of water. Blend until the ginger root becomes a fine pulp. Line a small bowl with two or three layers of cheesecloth and pour the pureed mixture onto the cheesecloth. Gather the edges of the cheesecloth edges together, twist and hold them as you squeeze as much juice a possible from the cheesecloth into the bowl. Apply the juice directly to your scalp, leave it on for five to 10 minutes and shampoo as usual.

Considerations

If you regularly treat your hair with ginger, you may notice that ginger juice lightens your hair color slightly. If you prepare a ginger oil treatment with unfiltered sesame oil, on the other hand, it may darken your hair a bit, GrannyMed.com explains. Still, the site notes, unfiltered sesame oil contains the most nutrients to nourish your hair.
