Mixed berries are full of cancer-fighting antioxidants.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more Americans die of lung cancer than any other form of cancer. Lung cancer is the result of cancerous cells that originate in your lungs and have the capability of spreading throughout your body. Like most cancers, prevention methods, healthy lifestyle and early detection, are methods to overcoming lung cancer. A healthy diet may contribute to lung cancer recovery.

Fruits & Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables contain some of the richest antioxidants of all of the food groups. These help fight free-radical damage that result in chronic diseases like cancer. They also strengthen your immune system, so you are better able to ward off infections that may hinder lung cancer recovery. Berries such as strawberries, black berries and blueberries are potent antioxidant sources. However, other fruits, such as oranges, grapefruit and kiwi, as well as vegetables like spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, kale and peppers are also full of antioxidants.

Whole Grains

Whole grains are fiber-rich and contain B-vitamins that may help decrease symptoms of lung cancer, states the University of Maryland Medical Center. Examples of whole-grain foods include oat bran, oatmeal, barley, millet, brown rice and quinoa. Avoid grains that are refined, as these have been stripped of their nutrient value. Refined grains include white bread, white rice, pasta and flour.

Omega-3 Fats

The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends that lung cancer patients consume omega-3 fats to aid in a stronger immune system, reduced inflammation and tissue repair for optimum recovery. Fish such as salmon, halibut, herring, tuna and mackerel, contain more omega-3 fats than most foods. However, fish oil supplements, walnuts, flaxseeds and flaxseed oil and linseed oil are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, if you do not like fish.

Dairy

Dairy products are effective cancer recovery foods because they are so rich in protein and calcium. This is important for physical strength and maintaining a healthy weight when recovering from lung cancer. Milk, cheese, yogurt and eggs are nutrient-dense dairy sources. Most dairy products have low-fat and non-fat versions. While these are generally healthier, use regular versions if you have difficulty consuming an adequate number of calories during recovery.
