Papaya has several beauty applications in addition to being delicious.

Papaya is a tropical fruit that is often eaten whole or mixed into smoothies, salsas, ice cream or salads. Papaya is also added to some hair and skin care products. Many of the beauty benefits of papaya can be achieved by buying and using the fruit directly rather than in a processed form.

Soften the Face

Papaya contains chemicals known as beta hydroxy acids, or BHAs. BHAs act as exfoliants, according to Encyclopedia.com. Papaya's ability to remove the top layers of the skin leaves fresh new skin exposed, resulting in a softer, smoother appearance. Papaya also clears away dirt and oils that contribute to acne flare-ups thanks to its BHA content. To use, simply apply a thin layer of papaya to your skin and allow to remain on your skin for several minutes before rinsing it off. Another benefit to papayas is that its BHA is thought to be less irritating than alpha hydroxy acid, another commonly used class of exfoliant. Papaya might cause allergies in some people and increase sun sensitivity, so use with caution.

Even Skin Tone

Some people experience uneven pigmentation or dark splotches on the skin. Treatments are available from dermatologists or over-the-counter. Marie Claire magazine explains that papaya can be used to prepare a homemade facial mask for those suffering from uneven pigment or sun spots. To prepare this inexpensive facial mask, blend together 2 tbsp. of honey with 1/2 cup of mashed ripe papaya fruit. Put a layer of this on your face and allow it to work for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. Apply your usual moisturizer.

Improve Your Health

An increase in beauty can come from both external treatments and by improving your general health. If you are healthy, your skin tone will look better and you will radiate energy, making you more attractive than you are when you feel sick and lethargic. Papaya can help improve your general health because it is rich in important nutrients. The University of Maryland Medical Center explains that papaya is an excellent source of Vitamin C. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that reduces the free radical damage which contributes to aging. Vitamin C can protect you from arthritis, heart disease and cancer. Maintaining your body disease-free will help improve your self-esteem and contribute to your beauty.
