Yeast infection, also commonly known as thrush or Candidiasis, normally develops when the level of fungus increases in the body, above a normal level, and thus leads to infection. In any normal situation, the fungal amount in one's body is always in limited amounts so that it is not harmful in any way. Nonetheless, there are a number of reasons that can lead to an increase in fungal levels which in turn can lead to a yeast infection or Candidiasis. This infection predominantly affects the genital areas, hence the terms penile infection in males and vaginal infection in females, and the mouth, which is an oral infection known as thrush.

An excess consumption of sugar, antibiotics, and yeast containing fermented foods remain some of the leading causes of a yeast problem. It is important to note that if someone has a genital infection, then he or she can pass it to their partner during sexual intercourse, as it is contagious.

Typical infection symptoms include itching, a burning sensation, a possible white colored discharge, pain during sex (for genital yeast infection) and difficulty in swallowing (for oral yeast infection). Prompt at-home treatment is important in preventing the condition from becoming severe and problematic.

It is equally worth noting that once you suffer from a fungal infection, there is a greater chance of you contracting another infection again. Thus, it would be good for you to look into some home cures for yeast infection. Some of the highly popular home treatments include:

1) Yogurt: This is considered one of the most effective home remedies since it can eradicate all of the fungus. One can either consume the yogurt (the no sugar variety) or have it rubbed in directly onto the affected areas for quicker relief. You can also apply the yogurt onto a tampon and insert it into the vagina.

2) Apple Cider Vinegar: This normally comes in handy for external treatment. Just mix a little of ACV in water and then apply it directly on the affected area.

3) Garlic: Garlic is an effective natural remedy for treating yeast infection itching because it has natural antifungal properties. It can be ground into a paste which can then be smeared on the affected external skin.

4) Boric Acid: This is to be used only as a suppository and never taken internally. Get hold of empty gelatin capsules in the "00" size. When you fill them with the boric acid powder, they should be just the right amount for insertion into the vaginal tract.

5) Mouth Wash: For an oral yeast infection, otherwise known as thrush, make your own mouth wash made up of 1 part Benadryl and 1 part Maalox. The generic versions will work just as fine. Gargle with this mixture and swish it around for at least 30 seconds. Repeat this procedure several times in the course of a day.

Besides the aforementioned home cures for yeast infection, having a balanced diet plus maintaining proper hygiene are also vital factors in preventing this condition. Avoid eating fermented or sugary foods, wear clean clothes made from cotton and take a daily bath. All of these measures will reduce your chances of contacting this infection.
