Ear Infection,Sinus Infection and Sinus Drainage

Many of you may know that the ear, nose and throat of an individual are interconnected. An infection in any one of these can easily spread and affect all three parts. Therefore, when a sinus infection infects the sinuses, it can easily spread out and affect the ears and throat too. So many times you might have the misconception that you have a throat or an ear infection, though the root of the problem may be a sinus infection.

Our sinuses constantly keep on draining the fluids into the throat cavity. This can prove very irritating to the throat, if the drained fluid contains some kind of infection and causes a throat infection. As the infected fluid flows throughout the connecting tubes, it can inflame the inner lining which can cause severe trouble for you. If the infected material spreads to the ears, then it can cause a severe build up of fluid around the ears, leading to infection and a steady pain in the eardrum. This should be attended to immediately, as it could lead to further complications.
Another function of the connecting tubes inside the head is to equalize the pressure that builds up inside the head. This is done so that your head does not explode when you change altitudes rapidly, like when going up a mountain or flying in a plain. The popping sound you hear is basically the tubes opening and closing to maintain the pressure. In case the tubes are blocked, then the air will not be able to pass through it, which can cause severe pain in the head due to pressure changes. The built up pressure will press against the vital organs in your head and cause debilitating pain. Other symptoms you will feel will be decreased hearing and a blocked sensation in the ears.
Any type of condition that can lead to a blockage of the nasal passage, like an allergy or an infection, can also lead to these same conditions appearing. The main cause for all these situations is the blockage that is caused by the build-up of mucus. Sinus treatment is most effective when it is aimed at the root cause and not at the symptoms. Therefore, nasal irrigation is the best way by which one can relieve the effects of a sinus infection.
If you have been suffering continuously from ear infections that do not seem to go away, then you should go and get your sinuses checked, as they could be the cause for the regularly appearing infections. Once diagnosed, there are a number of simple methods that can be used to reduce the infection.
