Turmeric is a spice thought to benefit many functions of the body, including hair and scalp health.

Derived from the root of the curcuma longa plant, turmeric is a spice that has been used in Indian and Chinese cultures as an herbal remedy, condiment and textile dye. According to World's Healthiest Foods, this spice has demonstrated excellent anti-inflammatory benefits, and is thought to have potential in relieving symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis and cystic fibrosis. Turmeric may also have various benefits for your hair, however it has not been scientifically proven to correct any hair or scalp conditions.

HAIR GROWTH

Curcumin, which is one of the components of turmeric, may have the effect of suppressing transmuting growth agent beta one, also known as TGF Beta One. TGF Beta One appears to play a role in the death of hair follicles and subsequent hair loss. HairLossResearch.org cites a study published in "Archives of Dermatology," which reports that curcumin appears to inhibit the activity of TGF Beta One and promote hair growth in rats. Human studies would be needed to validate this research, which was conducted by L. Huh and colleagues at the Biospectrum Life Science Institute in , Gyeonggi-do, Korea.

NATURAL HAIR DYE

According to LoveToKnowHerbs.com, the naturally yellow hue of turmeric can make it useful not only as a textile dye, but also as a natural dye for your hair. Although natural hair dyes can brighten your color, they usually won't provide the vivid color offered by commercial products. Love to Know Herbs recommends combining turmeric with other yellow-flowered herbs and flowers such as saffron, calendula, and chamomile tea. You should boil the mixture, allow it to cool and pour it over your head approximately 15 and 20 times.

SCALP BENEFITS

According to Turmeric: The Golden Spice of Life, turmeric can also be used to relieve dandruff and other scalp conditions. Turmeric may be helpful in reducing the signs of dandruff, as well as increasing circulation in the scalp and providing nutrition to the hair follicles. Turmeric may also be useful in other skin and scalp conditions such as dermatitis and eczema, however it is not considered a medical treatment for any of these conditions.
